Getting started at the library – website and user account
On the screen is an animated librarian standing in the training room of the library.
Hello!
In this short tutorial, I am going to show you the library website and your library account.
A screencast is shown in the background. The address of the HTWK Leipzig is typed in the browser: www.htwk-leipzig.de
Then, the page is scrolled all the way down and the menu item Bibliothek und Katalog is chosen which is positioned in the middle under the heading Zentrale Einrichtungen.
The librarian says: “You can access the library website via the HTWK website or go directly to www.bibliothek.htwk-leipzig.de.”
The librarian points to a menu on the right side of the screen: “You can find important information – like opening hours and news – on the homepage. There are also links to the catalogue, the user account, the room reservation and to all our tutorials.” Please subscribe to our newsletter to get up-to-date information.
Now the librarian points to the tabs in the upper section of the website: “You can access the other areas of the website via these tabs.”
Following this, individual tabs are clicked and the librarian explains the content:
“The tab Recherche provides links to the library catalogue and a number of research tips and guidelines.
The tab Ausleihe und Nutzung leads to information on our lending terms, on how to use different types of media, on checking out technical equipment and Vor Ort arbeiten offers information on single- and group-study rooms, on copying and printing options and much more.
The tab Kurse und Beratung leads to our training courses and tutorials.
You will find information on how to publish academic texts in the tab "Publizieren".
Via Hinweise für you can see the special services we offer to HTWK students.
Use the tab Über uns to access information on events and personal contact information.
The menu item Bibliothek von A bis Z provides a summary of important library information.
To access your user account, just click on Mein Bibliothekskonto on the library homepage.
On the homepage is a link to access your user account directly. It is called Direktlink zum Login ins Nutzerkonto in einem neuen Tab and can be found in the menu on the right.”
The librarian continues: “Choose Login als: HTWK-Mitglied and enter your university login details. Choose the data management you prefer in connection to how your data is to be dealt with. Then you are directed to your user account.”
On the screen, the option “Ich möchte beim nächsten Login erneut gefragt werden” is chosen and this is confirmed by clicking “Akzeptieren”.
The user account of Max Mustermann is shown.
The librarian explains the menu: “Here is a list of your current borrowings and you can renew the loan period for these items right here.
You can also see the status of your requests and any fees that might have accumulated.
Click on the little triangle to log off your user account.”
In the upper right-hand corner of the screen, the little triangle right of the user name is clicked. This opens a menu where the button Abmelden is positioned on the right. This is then clicked.
The librarian is back in the training room and asks: “Do you need more or more detailed information? You can find the library’s digital training courses and tutorials right here.”

Getting started at the library – the library catalogue
On the screen is an animated librarian standing in the training room of the library.
“In this tutorial, I am going to give you an outline of how best to use the library catalogue.”
The library website is now shown.
“You can access the catalogue via the library homepage.”
Click on the link Direktlink zum Starten einer Suche im Katalog in einem neuen Tab which is located in the menu on the right.”
The librarian continues: “We are looking for something on ‘richtig zitieren’.”
“Studying successfully” is typed into the search box of the catalogue.
The librarian explains: “I choose one of the results and see that a copy is available in the library.
One of the search results is chosen and the detailed view is shown. It says in the upper part of the screen: “Exemplar in der Bibliothek verfügbar”.
Scroll down to the lower half of the website where it says in the copy data: “Status: Exemplar ist vorhanden”. It also says: “Bereich: Wissenschaft, wissenschaftliches Arbeiten (1. Etage, grau)” as well as „DK 001.8 grün 300575“.
The librarian explains: “This is where you can find the book. The book is located on the first floor and its shelf mark is DK 001.8 grau 300575. By the way: Via “Wo steht das?” … you can see a site map of the location of this book.”
On the screen, “Wo steht das?” is clicked. This button is located on the right of the copy data. The site map is shown.
The librarian asks: “Have you found a relevant book, but it is not available?”
On the screen, the corresponding result is shown. It says in the detailed view: “Nicht verfügbar”. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. It says in the copy data: “Status: Ausgeliehen bis 19.10.2022”.
The librarian explains: “Here you can see until which date the book is checked out and you can request the book. You need to be logged in to do this.”
On the screen, the registration process takes place.
Now the button “Exemplar vormerken” appears below the location information.
The librarian says: “Click on “Exemplar vormerken”. And now click on "Absenden". Done! You will receive an e-mail notification when the book is ready for pick-up. You can check the status of your request in your user account.”
On the screen, the front page of the library catalogue is shown again.
The librarian says: “Would you like to access an e-book? No problem! Just search for a book on the topic you are interested in and choose a book with the information “online verfügbar”.”
On the screen the term “studieren ohne stress” is searched for and then a result with the information “Online verfügbar” is chosen.
The librarian says: “Click on the link for the full text and you are redirected to the provider of this specific e-book.”
On the screen, the menu “Online ansehen” is chosen. Click on the link to the full text which is located in the lower half. In this example, this is the link “WISO E-Books”.
The librarian explains: “Of course, you can also use the facets to limit the search results to online resources and books only.”
The facets are located on the right-hand side of the screen. Here search results can be limited using different criteria.
The librarian says: “You can find out how to access digital media from outside the library in our tutorials.”
The librarian says: “Was a specific title recommended in one of your classes? You can find important fundamental books in the textbook collection. In general, there are multiple copies of these books in the library. All students should have access to these textbooks and so in addition to the copies that can be checked out, there is one copy in the reference collection and/or a digital version.”
On the screen, “Wissenschaftstheorie zur Einführung” is searched for in the catalogue. One of the results is chosen and the detailed view is shown. In the menu ”Standort”, there are copies with the location “Lehrbuchsammlung” and also with the location “Präsenzbestand”.
The librarian explains: “The copies that can be checked out are in the textbook collection on the first floor. The books in the reference collection are located on the third floor and can only be used in the library.”
On the screen, the training room is shown again.
The librarian says: “Are you looking for a journal? I would like to show you an example! We are looking for a journal called "Medien & Kommunikationswissenschaft : M & K".
On the screen, the term “M & K” is entered in the search box.
The librarian says: “This journal is available in a printed and a digital version.”
On the screen, the corresponding result is clicked.
Two results are shown: the printed and also the digital edition.
The librarian says: “Click on "online verfügbar" to access the digital version. Afterwards, use the link underneath "Online ansehen"”
The edition with the information "online verfügbar" is clicked and afterwards the link "Online ansehen" is used.
The librarian says: “And now I will show you the printed version. Issues of this journal are kept both in the closed stacks and in open access. You can find all issues of this journal since 2002 on the third floor. The shelf mark is Z 1322. Older issues are kept in the closed stacks. In order to access the issues from the closed stacks you have to make a request. Log in with your university login details to do this.
On the screen, the corresponding result is chosen. In the detailed view under "Standort" two locations are shown. Magazin (closed stacks) and Zeitschriften (journals). During the explanation of the librarian, the corresponding location is clicked. Then, it is shown under "Bestand" which issues are in which location. Below this information, the specific shelf mark is shown.
By the way: This tells you which issues can be found in the library’s collections.
Now the librarian is back in the training room.
She says: “And now I will show you how to find an article.”
On the screen, the library catalogue is shown again. “HTWK Leipzig” is entered in the search box.
The librarian says: “Let’s check which articles are there for the key word ‘HTWK Leipzig’. I will use the facets again to limit the results to articles only.”
On the right-hand side, where the facets are located, Artikel is chosen in the menu Medientyp.
The librarian asks: “Would you like to view the newest results at the top of the list? Then you can use the sorting function.”
Datum neuestes is clicked in the menu Sortieren nach.
The librarian says: „Choose an article. Just click on online verfügbar and view the full text.”
On the screen, an article is chosen, click on online verfügbar and then click on the full text.
The librarian is back in the training room and says: “And finally a few tips for our digital services. Not all digital information the library provides can be found via the catalogue. But the catalogue informs you about relevant databases for your search terms. Here is an example: I am searching for the key word ‘Normen’. The catalogue suggests the database Perinorm which is licensed by the library.
On the screen, the term “Normen” is typed in the search box of the catalogue. Above the search results, directly beneath the search box, the “vorgeschlagene Datenbank” Perinorm is shown.
The librarian continues explaining: “You can also find subject-related information on the website – Fachbezogen informieren.”
On the screen, the homepage of the library is shown. The tab Recherche can be found on the left-hand side of the upper section. The drop-down menu opens and the option Fachbezogen informieren is chosen.
The librarian says: “Here, digital services for different subjects are presented. These include links to databases and digital journals.”
As an example, click on the link zum Fachportal Bauwesen in the general section for Bauwesen.
The librarian is now back in the training room and asks: “Do you need more or more detailed information? You can find the library’s digital training courses and tutorials right here.
